Joseph Bazalgette’s London drainage system: engineering that saved a city

When the Thames began to smell like death in the mid-19th century, one man had a plan. Sir Joseph William Bazalgette was the British civil engineer who stopped cholera from eating London alive. He didn’t just fix the pipes. He fundamentally changed how a metropolis handles waste, proving that infrastructure is not just concrete. It is public health.

Bazalgette was born on March 28, 1819, in Enfield, Middlesex, a place that is now part of London. He died on March 15, 1891, in Wimbledon, Surrey, which is now in the London borough of Merton. His life’s work wasn’t immediate. He started in Northern Ireland, then moved to Westminster in 1842 as a consulting engineer. By 1852, he was the chief engineer for the London Metropolitan Commission of Sewers. He took the top role at the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1855. That position put him in charge of the city’s physical backbone.

Why did it take so long?

Money. And politics.

Consultants fought over ideas. Budgets dried up. The actual construction of the London drainage system didn’t really get rolling until 1859. When it finally opened in 1865, it was a massive feat. The system included 83 miles (134 km) of intercepting sewers. It took another decade to finish everything. Full completion arrived in 1875.

The intercepting sewers were designed to catch wastewater before it reached the river, preventing the Thames from becoming a toxic open sewer.

This wasn’t just about stopping the stench. It was about saving lives. Before Bazalgette, the river was a dumping ground for human waste. Cholera outbreaks were common. The new system moved sewage away from the river and to treatment works on the outskirts of London. The impact was immediate. Waterborne diseases dropped significantly. The city became safer to live in.

Bazalgette didn’t stop at sewers. He reshaped the London skyline. He built the Victoria Embankment on the north side and the Albert Embankment on the south, completed between 1864 and 1870. These structures held back the river and created space for roads and parks. He also built the Chelsea Embankment (1871–1874) and Northumberland Avenue (1876).

He designed new bridges too. The Putney Bridge (also called Fulham Bridge) went up between 1882 and 1886. The Battersea Bridge followed from 1886 to 1890. In 1889, he launched the Woolwich Free Ferry, a steam-powered boat that crossed the river at no cost to passengers. This was a practical move. It helped workers get across the Thames without paying fares.
