How #Poco redefined country rock: The band’s evolution and legacy

Poco was more than just a band in the 70s and 80s. They were the architects of country rock. They created a sound that resonates in the genre today. The original lineup was loaded with talent from the West Coast. Richie Furay and Jim Messina traveled from Buffalo Springfield. They did not come alone. They brought in George Grantham, Randy Meisner and Rusty Young. Each member has their own origin story, but they bring something new to the table.

The band was founded in Los Angeles in mid-1968. At first they called themselves Pogo. That name didn’t last long. Walt Kelly, creator of the famous Pogo cartoon, disagreed. So they changed the name. Poco it was. This change is not superficial. This marks a new beginning.

Furay was already known for his soft, clear-sounding ballads. But he picked up speed. These became an energetic and fast-paced song. These became Poco’s signature pieces. Messina is different. He’s a great record producer. He can make a hit. His guitar playing is very sharp. This is insightful.

Then the rest of the band joined. Rusty Young has mastered the pedal steel guitar. His work is truly a masterpiece. Randy Meisner has a beautiful, high voice. The instrumental music is lively. Harmony becomes more harmonious. You can hear it on their debut album. Pickin’ Up the Pieces was released in 1969. Everything they built is on display.

Combines country and Southern Californian rock

Poco didn’t invent the fusion of country and rock. The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield paved the way. But Poco has improved it. They maintain a high reputation. Albums like “A Good Feelin’ to Know” (1972) and “Crazy Eyes” (1973) proved this. The style is consistent. In a time of constant change, this is a rarity.

Personnel changes are inevitable. Meisner is gone. He played alongside Rick Nelson before helping found the Eagles. His place on the field was taken by Timothy B. Schmit. Messina also left in 1970 and teamed with Kenny Loggins. The combination of Loggins and Messina was a huge success. Paul Cotton took over the role of Messina.

The 1970s were busy. In 1973, Furay participated in a short-term collaboration. He collaborated with ex-Bird member Chris Hillman and songwriter J.D. Souther. In 1977, Schmit left Poco and joined the Eagles. But Poco continued. Commercial success has its limits. Legend (1978) is still their best selling album. It culminates in a place others have only hinted at.

The Long Road into the 21st Century
