At its core, an autotroph is an organism that feeds itself using inorganic substances. It doesn’t need a menu. It doesn’t need to hunt.
Plants do this with light.
Certain microbes use methane.
They take raw materials from the environment and build themselves. These were the original colonizers. They arrived first.
