Amazon Studios has officially greenlit The Challenger, a mini-series chronicling the events leading up to and following the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. The series will star Kristen Stewart as Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and a key figure in the subsequent investigation.
From Greenlight to Orbit: A Two-Year Journey
The project, first announced in 2024, faced delays before receiving the official go-ahead. The Challenger is based on Meredith E. Bagby’s book, “The New Guys,” which profiles the groundbreaking 1978 class of NASA astronauts, including Ride. The series will be spearheaded by Maggie Cohn (The Staircase, American Crime Story ) as showrunner and executive producer, with James Hawes (Slow Horses, Black Mirror ) directing.
Beyond Twilight: Stewart’s Diverse Roles
While widely recognized for her role in The Twilight Saga, Stewart has cultivated a varied filmography, showcasing her versatility in projects like the psychological thriller Personal Shopper and the sci-fi horror Underwater. This new role marks her first major foray into biographical storytelling focused on a prominent historical figure.
The Weight of History: The Challenger Disaster
The series will delve into the circumstances surrounding the Challenger disaster, not merely as a tragedy but as a critical moment in space exploration history. The narrative will focus on the Rogers Commission’s inquiry into NASA’s internal failures that contributed to the accident, with Ride’s personal involvement as a member of the commission being a central storyline.
Ride herself was a pioneer, achieving her first space flight aboard the Challenger on June 18, 1983, during the STS-7 mission. She went on to fly again in 1984 on STS-41G, conducting Earth observations for eight days. Ride passed away in 2012 at the age of 61.
“Sally Ride’s courage and brilliance changed history, and we couldn’t imagine a more powerful actor to bring her story to life than Kristen Stewart,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios.
A Collaborative Production
The series is a joint effort between Big Swing Productions (Kyra Sedgwick and Valerie Stadler), Nevermind (Kristen Stewart, Dylan Meyer, and Maggie McLean), and Amblin Television (Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey).
Currently, there is no confirmed release date for The Challenger. However, the series promises to be a compelling exploration of one of the most pivotal moments in American space history, framed through the lens of a true icon.
The Challenger disaster was more than just a technical failure; it exposed systemic flaws within NASA and raised critical questions about accountability and oversight in high-stakes scientific ventures. The series’ focus on the Rogers Commission’s investigation ensures that the story will not shy away from the uncomfortable truths surrounding the tragedy.
