How different types of windows direct light and air inside the building

We look out. This is the main function of windows. It’s an opening in the wall that lets in sunlight, fresh air, and sometimes a view worth preserving. But the way to fill this gap has changed. In the past, people used stone grilles or wooden slats. Then there is iron. Glass later became the standard, but translucent materials such as mica and paper also played a similar role in East Asia and elsewhere.

Mechanisms are important. Not all windows work the same way.

How sash windows and sash windows work

If you drag the window up or down, it is a sash window. The frame holds the glass in place and the sash is the movable part. There are two main flavors here. A single-hung sash has one half that moves. The bottom panel slides up. The top pane stays put. It’s very simple. cheap. Fully functional.

A double-hung sash is more complex. Both the top and bottom parts slide. This allows for better airflow control. Open the top to let hot air out and open the bottom to let cold air in. It has a classic design for a reason.

Next is the swing type. A casement window is hinged on the side. It can be opened like a door. When closed, it attaches securely to the frame. This provides excellent insulation. But you need room to swing.

Awnings, funnels, solid glass

Sometimes you need to protect yourself from the rain. awning window solve this problem. It has a hinge at the top. It swings outward. Even if it is raining, you can crack it open. The upper part serves as protection. Air enters from below, but water remains outside.

On the other side is the hopper window. This hinge is located at the bottom. It can turn inwards. It is usually found in bathrooms and basements. It’s small. Sends air upwards. They keep bugs out if installed correctly.

And then there’s the glass that does nothing. A picture window is large. It is fixed. It won’t open. It exists only to frame a view or fill a room with light. This is a commitment to transparency. You cannot get a breeze from it. You get a painting.

The Projection of Bay Windows

Bay windows are different. It projects outward from the outer wall of the building. This forms an interior recess. Why is it built this way? Increase the amount of light entering the room. It expands the view. The walls are angled to let light in from several different directions, not just one flat plane.

This is also a structural choice. Oriel windows are similar, but instead of extending all the way to the ground, they are supported by corbels or brackets. Both increase space. Both add personality.

Why is this important now?

We tend to think of windows as just holes in the wall. They are not. They are regulatory devices. They control the climate. They control privacy. They control how we see the world and how the world sees us. The window type you choose affects your energy bills. A poorly sealed casement allows heat to escape easily. A large picture window can let in too much sunlight, increasing cooling costs.

The history of windows is the history of human comfort. From stone grilles to double glazing,
